Kevin Keegan
It’s been an exciting few days to be in Tyneside.
There certainly has been an atmosphere of expectation the last couple of days with Newcastle United’s decision to appoint Kevin Keegan as manager. People stopped what they were doing to listen to his press conference the other day.
He took the opportunity to deliver exactly the words the Geordie public had been waiting for with the promise of free-flowing attacking football; Alan Shearer and the return of Newcastle United to the Premiership’s elite.
The memory of his tactical style is sweet. For the impartial fan, watching his Newcastle side of the 1990′s was nothing but thrilling. In fact, I think football in general will benefit if the all out attacking football promised by Mr Keegan brings the Magpies some success.
There’s nothing worse than two teams set up 4-5-1 facing off and nullifying each other.
I think the biggest winner out of this will be Mike Ashley. If there’s one way to guarantee a sell out at St James’ Park for the next 18 months then this could be it. Merchandise sales of shirts with ‘King Kev’ on the back have gone through the roof. If Keegan doesn’t do it then he can consider this venture ‘a ghost exorcised’.
And if Keegan isn’t a success there may be an even larger spectre waiting in the wings in Alan Shearer.
I wish them all the best.
